LandscapingGrass in flower beds
» Aurae Beidler - How do I successfully get rid of grass growing in my landscaping Hi, Do you have any tips for getting rid of grass that is growing in my flower beds? My husband and I tried weeding it all out, which was only partly successful. It took a lot of work! Does the black plastic work to kill the grass? I don't really want to use any chemicals because our dog lives in the backyard. Any ideas?

Aurae, Grass is always a perennial problem...pun intended. I have several very specific suggestions...too many to write out as a discussion answer. So, I'll post an article this weekend about grassin Landscape Beds. Look for it! Thanks for the question and idea for an article! Georgene

Aurae, I have just finished an article about weeds, including grasses, in flower beds: Weeds in Garden Landscapes I share your apprehension about using herbicides, but suggest that you include one of the least personally offensive in your "menu" of strategies if the problem is severe. BTW, I do not like "black plastic" - it is photodegardable and makes a mess as it starts to break down. Of course, there are also problems with landscape fabric. These issues are discussed in my series of articles about landscape fabrics which starts with: Landscape Fabric for Projects: Pros and Cons [landscaping.suite101.com/article.cfm/landscape_fabric_pros__cons]
Cheers! Georgene
