Elizabeth Roys kept five journals and took numerous photographs during her student tour of early 20th century Asia. See them at Smith College, Northampton, MA.

What a treat! Imagine being able to view 80-year-old photographs made while on an Asian garden tour before loosing these landscapes and gardens to time and world events. Temple and palace gardens, public and private gardens, and even those of the rich and working classes no longer exist.

This is also a fascinating peek at the life and times of student Elizabeth K. Roys and her mother during their early 20th century Asian travels. Roys kept five journals in which she recorded her observations as they traveled through China, Japan, Korea, Siam (now Thailand) and India.

Asian Gardens of the 1920s: The Travels of Elizabeth K. Roys will be on display now through February 7, 2007 at the Church Exhibit Gallery in the Church Exhibition Gallery, Smith College Lyman Plant House, College Lane, Northampton, MA. It is worth a little trip to see this exhibit.
