Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, jewels of our garden landscapes, depart the U.S. during winter months for much balmier winter weather in Mexico and Central America. Here is a wonderful opportunity to get to observe and know them in their winter quarters.
BILL HILTON JR., Executive Director of the Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History,in York, South Carolina will lead in early February, 2007 small groups of teachers, citizen scientists, and hummer lovers on eight-day excursions to Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, in order to:
- observe,
- capture,
- band,
- and release unharmed Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris).
Until Hilton's first trip to the area in 2005, no one had ever systematically studied RTHUs on their Costa Rican wintering grounds. These trips continue to provide opportunities for folks to make real contributions to a body of knowledge about a hummingbird species that is so relatively common and about which so little is actually known.
Please take a look at the Costa Rica Trip Announcement for details about the trip. The deadline for registration is approaching, so, if interested, please sign up today.
You do not need to be an accomplished birder or scientist to participate. Hilton will teach you everything you need toknow to study the RTHB in a beautiful tropical country that is safe, healthy, and tourist-friendly.
