I carefully choose the photos that accompany my Blog and articles. They illustrate what I want my writing to say...

  • 5 April - Most gardeners value the scent of lavender and find it relaxing. For this reason, I chose it to illustrate this week's article gardener's yoga: A Review.
  • 2 April - To illustrate my "Blog" this week, I chose a photo of a Pavillion Garden at the University of VA, Charlottesville. These gardens were just starting to come into bloom when I took this photo on March 24. The percision and neatness with which they were designed are a treat to the gardener who appreciated formal gardens.
  • 29 March - Cardinals bring splashes of color to the shadier parts of our yard during the winter months. We have a series of six feeders - each with a different kind of food - to attract different populations of birds to the areas where the winter sun is least likely to shrine.
  • 22 March - My garden friend and toad's relative sits upon his south-facing house at noon on the Vernal Equinox. If he would look over his shoulder he'd see that his shadow is short - the shortest of the day. Readers can find out why this is by visiting Environmental Factors in the Landscape: 2.
  • 15 March - Druids, Saints and Trees..."Laughing Man" one of my favorite garden sculptures was peeking through foliage in an Irish castle garden in June, 2003.
  • 8 March - Microclmates...these are the common spring snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) which have colonized in the shelter of two 35-year-old euonymus trees near my front door. They are the first plants to bloom in my garden in Spring. We eagerly await them.
  • 1 March...Environmental Factors: 1...a south-facing view last autumn of a local pond. It shows three important environmental factors that influence plants: water, dominant vegetation and hilly terrain.
