Are you ready to beat the heat? Trees, patio covers and market umbrellas are the answer.

Are you prepared for the solar radiation that will soon be causing UV damage to your skin, drapes and house trim? Trees are the best way to get out of the rays of the sun. Not only do they provide a screen from the ravages of the sun, but they are the most important aspect of a beautiful design for the garden- as trees tend to make the garden special. There is a proper tree for every situation and planting environment. Match the tree to the site.

For example, don’t plant a tree that is prone to root rot in a low boggy spot or in the lawn. Plant a water-loving species such as the Tupelo Tree (Nyssa sylvatica) in such a location. Also, Find out how large the tree ultimately will become and match to the space allowed, and if concrete is in the area, don’t plant aggressive rooted species. Deciduous trees are usually best on the south and west side of the home. When the leaves are shed in the fall, beneficial light is received, thereby warming the home.

If you have an undeveloped area on your property, why not install an outdoor garden-room. Don't fill it with lawn that will require maintenance and additional water. Instead, choose a grove - type tree species like the Coastal Redwood , Japanese Maple, Tupelo, Linden, Jacqmontii or River Birch. Plant five, seven, fifteen or more.

Planted with unequal spacing they will eventually provide a sacred retreat, where you can beat the heat – your very own secret garden. As this area develops over time, you may want to install a water-feature, firepit, and flagstone patio to make this area a favorite gathering place.

Patio covers are the most expensive way to beat the heat but offer additional comfort when fitted with outdoor ceiling fans and lights. Solid upper panels can be installed for 100 percent shade and protection from the elements with open slatted areas for letting filtered light in as desired. Wood covers were once the choice but today fabricated materials are available that look like wood. These low maintenance covers now come in different pillar supports, including Grecian, and are available in many different colors.

And finally, market umbrellas add a beautiful courtyard feel to the garden and provide 100 percent shade- still retaining an open garden feel. Sizes of 12 foot and wider are most desirable for shade and in fall can be removed easily and stored.
