Removing a wisteria vine from the yard is a moderately difficult process that requires patience and the utmost care.

Despite the fact that wisteria produces beautiful and fragrant blossoms, if neglected the wisteria vine quickly grows out of control; destroying absolutely everything in its path. The wisteria is powerful enough to suffocate mature trees and ruin cement buildings.

If one does not have the extra time to properly maintain his or her wisteria by pruning it on a regular basis, removal of the entire wisteria plant is inevitable. It is best to decide on removal before the plant becomes out of control; making it nearly impossible to kill the entire plant on the first attempt. This article gives step by step instructions detailing the steps one must take to completely remove wisteria vine from his or her yard.

Step One - Gather the Needed Supplies Before Beginning

To complete this task, one will need to possess:

  1. a pair of hedge clippers
  2. a spade shovel
  3. gardening gloves
  4. a disposable yard waste bag or wheel barrow
  5. a herbicide equipped to kill wisteria and a paint brush to apply it with.

Step Two - Remove Seedlings from Base of Mother Plant

After inspecting the base of the problematic wisteria plant, one should have noticed the emergence of baby plants somewhere near the base of the plant’s main trunk. These baby seedlings should be removed first by digging up the roots or gently pulling on the stems of the plants. Take care to remove every trace of the wisteria root, seed pods and vines so there is little chance for resurgence. Discard the foliage, roots and vines in a trash bag or in a wheelbarrow for easy transportation.

Step Three - Use Hedge Clippers to Trim Remaining Vines

Cutting vines with hedge clippers is the most efficient way to carry out this step of the procedure. For cleanliness and organizational purposes, begin by cutting the thinnest wisteria vines first before moving on the thicker branches. Cut each stem as close to the ground as possible. Consider using a shovel to uproot the smaller weaker plants. Be sure to clean up any broken or dropped wisteria vine that may have fallen during the removal process to protect oneself from another attempt at removal.

Step Four - Apply Herbicide to the Stump and Maintain Care

Use a clean paintbrush to apply a layer of herbicide directly onto the stump of the removed wisteria. It is best to use a paintbrush because it gives one more control over where the herbicide lands; protecting the foliage of the surrounding plants.

Check the sight once every month during the spring and summer months to see if there are any new sprouts. Any fresh growth you see should be immediately removed and the sight of emergence should be coated with herbicide.
